The Music Lovers’ Club of Rome announces the current recipients of the three annual scholarships given to music students at Berry College and Shorter University. Elizabeth Telford, a musical theater major, received the Music Lovers’ Scholarship designated for a Shorter University student. The local club’s scholarship to a Berry College music student was awarded to Courtney Blakey, piano major. The Mabel Owens Todd Scholarship, which annually rotates between the two schools, this year was given to two students at Shorter University. Bailie Queen and Hope Moore, both voice majors, shared this award. These students will perform for the community during the club’s meetings scheduled this year. In addition to the three locally funded awards, the Music Lovers’ Club, affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs, also supports the national funding for extensive financial support to student musicians and emerging performing artists.

On Sept. 8, at 10 a.m., the Music Lovers’ Club of Rome, organized in 1904, will hold its annual Welcoming Coffee meeting in the clubhouse at the Village of Maplewood, 100 Village Blvd., (off of Kingston Highway, past the fairgrounds). All Romans who enjoy music and may wish to be part of this organization and its mission of support for young musicians are welcome to visit this meeting and learn more about membership. The club regularly meets from September to May on the second Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m., usually in the Coosa Room of the Sarah Hightower Library.
