As presented in the Fifty Years Ago column in the Thursday, Nov. 8, 1962, edition of the Rome News-Tribune

When Leonard Neal, Hugh White and Marion Jackson went out possum hunting one night near Lindale cemetery, they were almost frightened out of their wits. Just as they were nearing the entrance to the place of the dead, someone was heard to commence rendering up a loud prayer. For a few moments the hunters stood speechless and breathless, when another voice was hard to exclaim “amen.” Then the boys detected some men, all on their knees, and upon investigation it was proved to be four well known religious men who too this method of sending up prayer. Possum hunters were very busy at Van’s valley and many possums and ‘tatters had made their appearance on tables.

L.M. Landrum, the faithful superintendent of the county alms house and farm, brought in three sweet potatoes weighing 15 pounds, and C.L. Wilkerson was exhibiting some sweet potatoes raised on his place north of Rome, five of them weighing 22-3/4 pounds. … The Massachusetts Mills had installed a fire alarm system that gave Lindale one of the best of any city twice her size in the South. While trying out some of the box calls, many in the surrounding country, hearing the loud blasts of the big whistle, thought a series of fires were occurring. … The Georgia State Board of Health announced that smallpox, one of the most contagious as well as unnecessary diseases could easily be eradicated from the state by the simple process of vaccination; but to accomplish this, vaccination had to be general, thorough and complete.
