“Lavender Lodge”, beautiful summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Cothran on Lavender Mountain, was completely destroyed by fire this week a half century ago. It had been the scene of some of the most charming social events in recent years. … The Rev. J.H. Eakes, presiding elder of the Rome District, narrowly escaped serious injury when struck down and run over by an electric runabout driven by a lady in Atlanta. He received several bruises. … County Commissioner C.M. Young had a narrow escape when his buggy was struck by a streetcar as he was crossing the track. … A streetcar struck the wagon being driven by J.O. Winfry and demolished it, but he was unhurt. … C.W. Camp, while riding his motorcycle, fell and was knocked unconscious, but he was unhurt. … Arthur Parker, 15, shot himself in the ankle as he started on a hunting trip. The hammer on his gun caught in his coat and caused a discharge. … John O’Bryant, of Lindale, had the misfortune to lose two horses that died. …

With the city primary election scheduled for next Tuesday in 1913, interest was apparently lacking as only 1,148 voters had registered. Qualifying candidates included T.B. Broach and John C. Printup, First Ward; P.J. Mullen and Luke McDonald, Second Ward; Dr. L.F. McKay, Third Ward; J.W. Keown, Fourth Ward; E.L. Pearce and P.H. Vandiver, Fifth Ward.

The young businessmen of the city met this week in 1913 to organize a Manufacturers and Merchants Association Auxiliary. A committee to perfect the organization included O.P. Willingham, D.C. Hancock, Berrien Chidsey, W.O. Tarpley and Joseph Pelham. … The Honorable Seaborn Wright delivered a most powerful temperance address to students of Berry School for Boys and Martha Berry School for Girls. … Donald Harper, brother of Miss Joy Harper, who resided in Paris, had received the honor of being appointed as a chevalier of the Legion of Honor by President Pointcare of France. … The proceeds from the sale of the paintings by Mrs. Woodrow Wilson in Philadelphia were to go to the Martha Berry School. … The adjutant general announced the appointment of Capt. Harry P. Meikleham to be Georgia’s official military representative in Washington during Wilson’s inauguration. …

The Fast Vestibule, No. 13, from Jacksonville, was on time both Wednesday and Thursday this week a half century ago. This train was rarely on time. … The new parcel post was proving popular in Rome. Dozens passed through the post office daily and it was anticipated that additional men would be put on to handle them. ... Iron protectors had been put on the four corners of the monuments on Broad Street to prevent passing vehicles from chipping off the corners. Each had already suffered from contact with the wheels of buggies and wagons. … W.W. Huffman, who had been call officer, was named special officer and was to devote his time to looking up street tax defaulters. … The Darlington basketball five defeated the Rome High School team 33 to 22 in a game here this week a half century ago. …
