2 mall stores shutting down

Following closely on the heels of the closure of Abihka Handbags & More, a women’s fashion accessories store, the Rock Candy Bar and Blaze Hair Salon are also closing their doors at Mount Berry Square mall. All three stores were on the north wing of the mall headed toward Sears.

Casie Autry has owned the Rock Candy Bar for about 11 months. The store offered more than 250 different types of candy. Monday was the store’s last day in operation at the mall.

Rock Candy Bar did shut down once before in the past year, however Autry said mall management came back with some help on the lease but that business simply couldn’t justify renewing her lease.

Autry did indicate that she expects to try another location at some point in the future, probably before the year is out.

Blaze owner Shandala Singleton could not be reached for comment Tuesday. The phone at the hair salon said the business is not accepting calls. Not a hair stylist herself, Singleton attempted to manage the first independent salon in the mall location, which housed Regis Hair Salon for many years.

Located adjacent to the Rock Candy Bar, Blaze had also been open for about 11 months.

Under the current management, the mall rent is very reasonable. The problem is not the mall. It is the local economy. When the economy was booming a few years back, the mall had all the anchor spots filled and low vacancy. As the jobs in Rome started disappearing, so did stores from the mall. Granted their previous ownership overcharged tenants a great deal which left a sour taste in future tenants mouths. Once the economy starts to pick up, I'm sure the mall will see better days to come.

ihoppy-"Harbinning of the Arteries" that's pretty good....I agree with you The_Source...if they got good stores in the mall and made the rent affordable, the mall would flourish..but right now...despite gas being outrageous...it's more of a pleasure to shop out of town or online :(

Unfortunately, until the mall "fathers" get together and actually try to get some anchor stores at this mall that people will actually shop at, this will continue to happen. There is no incentive to shop at Mount Berry due to lack of decent stores. The candy place closing was no big surprise. Took the grandson in at the beginning of summer and they charged me over four dollars for twenty seven peanut M&M's. Same exact M&M's you can get at any local gas station for a dollar or less. I was amazed to say the least. The specialty candy was never stocked either, they were constantly out of this and out of that and everything was always "on order" with poor management such as this, it doesn't surprise me that they closed down. Hopefully they can get their act together and open at another venue. Hopefully leaving the mall and their ridiculous rent prices will allow the Rock Candy Store to pass some of those savings onto the consumer! Good luck in your furture endeavors!

The Source must have never shopped at any other candy stores before. As for as I could remember their prices were lower than any other candy store I have ever been in. Everyone has grown accustom to getting their items at Walmart and the dollar tree. Making the Chinese rich! The Source must have shopped there a lot to know so much about the the store. The fact is Rome has never supported its small business and if it did we wouldn't be seeing so many go under.

I guess they could just convert the mall into a medical complex with a food court. Food and medical seem to do well in Rome. It could be the new Harbin Clinic.
