Two men pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday in separate cases involving the illegal possession of firearms.
According to information presented in court:
An Illinois man pleaded guilty to firearms and drug possession charges in connection with a 2007 incident in which he was allegedly found in possession of around 10 pounds of suspected marijuana and several stolen pistols.
Frank Stewart was pulled over by the Georgia State Patrol for a bracket that obscured an Illinois license plate in July 16, 2007, in Gordon County. When Stewart began acting “unusually nervous” the GSP trooper began to question him further, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Jones.
They found suspected marijuana in 11 separate vacuum-sealed packages in a blue duffle bag along with the pistols.
“Apparently he was moving drugs from Georgia to Illinois to further his habit,” Jones told the court.
In addition, a Mexican national entered a guilty plea to charges concerning possession of a sawed-off shotgun and illegally re-entering the U.S. after being deported on two previous occasions.
The charges are the result of an incident in Walker County on May 28, 2009, when police say Uriel Rodriguez-Anchondo was found to be in possession of a sawed-off shotgun, as well as ammunition, at a traffic stop.
After a background check, it was determined that the suspect had been deported from the U.S. in 2004 and again 2006.
Both men are scheduled to be sentenced on Feb 5, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.
