Cedartown and Rome are reportedly among several prospective North Georgia downtowns contending for selection as a filming site for a Hollywood film.

Actor Billy Bob Thornton made an unannounced swing through downtown Cedartown on Tuesday, including a stop at Holmes for Her, a female clothing store, where he chatted and posed for pictures with the store’s owners and customers.

“He was a super, super nice guy,” said Stephen Casey, with related downtown business Holmes Clothing.

Casey said Thornton confirmed that he is looking for “a metro Atlanta area downtown and also a plantation house.”

“He’s also been to Rome and Cartersville, among others,” Casey said. “He said they are looking for a place to shoot several scenes.”

Thornton also was said to be struck by the appearance of Cedartown’s historic West Cinema, a working movie theater that has recently been restored and has the classic look of small-town theaters of decades past.

Thornton’s visit was brief and was made with no advance publicity to local media.

According to Entertainment Weekly magazine, details were leaked in January about a film to be directed by Thornton and co-starring Duvall called “Jayne Mansfield’s Car.” In an interview with the magazine, Duvall described the movie as a “Southern tale” that “puts Tennessee Williams in the back seat — it’s that brilliant.”
