Darlington junior Peyton Albertson isn’t a big talker, but others are certainly saying plenty about her.

She was recently named the 2012 PGA Junior Tour player of the year.

“It really is a big honor,” said the humble Albertson on Tuesday.

Albertson earned the prestigious award for girls ages 15-18 at the tour championship in Sea Island. She was given her plaque at an awards ceremony that followed the championship.

For Albertson, pure love of the game played a big part in her success.

“I played on the tour last year and this is my first year being really involved and playing a lot of tournaments,” she said. “I just love golf, and it’s a big honor, because I really enjoyed being on the tour.”

The golf standout is the daughter of Coosa Country Club head PGA golf professional, Brian Albertson, so it’s safe to say the game is in her blood.

“It was a huge honor,” said Brian. “We’re just thankful to everyone at Coosa Country Club for supporting her.”

Over the span of the tour, from January to December, Peyton won three tournaments and placed seventh in the tour championship the weekend of Dec. 8.

Only the top 20 from each age group were invited to the championship.

Although the young golfer’s hard work paid off in a big way, Peyton noted that the camaraderie with other girls on the tour makes it more play than work.

“I had a lot of other teammates who also won tournaments throughout the year, and I get to travel with girls on my team, so it’s not just work all the time,” said Peyton

Among those girls were a few fellow Romans who also saw success on the tour.

Maggie Ashmore, Hannah Mae Deems and Hannah Grevalius all won a tournament apiece on the tour.
