Army’s chief chaplain to speak at Shorter commencement

Shorter College students will get to hear from the U.S. Army’s chief of chaplains at the school’s Dec. 12 commencement ceremonies. Maj. Gen. Douglas Carver, a Rome native, will speak at the ceremonies, to be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Winthrop-King Centre.

Carver became the Army’s 22nd chief of chaplains in 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in religious studies from the University of Tennessee, a Master of Divinity degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from the Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. An ordained Southern Baptist minister, he has pastored churches in Kentucky, Colorado and Virginia.

Carver’s previous assignments include serving as the Army’s deputy chief of chaplains; director of training for the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School in Fort, Jackson, S.C.; and as chaplain in Iraq, Germany and Fort Campbell, Ky.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Staff Identification Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge and the Ranger Tab.

Carver and his wife, Sunny, have two daughters and three grandchildren.
