The Rome community comes together to learn on Feb 1 when the Rome Federated Garden Clubs Inc. presents a program teaching locals how to use native horticulture, flowers and vegetables in their own garden spaces.

The event is free and open to the public.

“Rome has a long history of participation in the community,” said Jackie Fulmer, President of Rome Federated Garden Clubs. “Through the years, flower shows, tours of homes, garden spots, Blue Star Markers in honor of armed forces, planting trees on Arbor Day and member involvement in their homes, churches and civic ares have been teaching tools for the community as well as the sharing of talents and education of its members.”

The program, “Art In The Garden,” will bring together information and demonstrations for area residents to learn to use native materials in their own homes. The speaker is Art D’Ambrosio who holds numerous degrees in horticulture and agriculture, including a Master of Arts degree in Teaching from Cornell University. He has taught floral design for six years at Georgia Northwestern Technical College.

“Adding beauty to your home does not have to be costly or stressful,” D’Ambrosio said. “It can be fun in finding new uses for everyday items. A willingness to jump in and experiment is all you need.”

D’Ambrosio will demonstrate how to use plant materials found in the yard or along highways to add a touch of color to the home as well as eye-catching centerpieces made from common items found in the kitchen and garden.

“The art of floral design does not need to be intimidating,” he said. “Come learn how to enjoy using simple steps to create your own masterpieces.”

Following the program, a mini walking tour of three properties on the site will be open for viewing. Two cottage homes and a condo will feature designs created by members of Rome’s garden clubs.

Refreshments will be served prior to the program and door prizes will be awarded.

“Art in the Garden” takes place Feb. 1 starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Clubhouse of The Village of Maplewood on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
