The marker honoring the Second Atlanta International Pop Festival was unveiled this weekend at the Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron. The festival was held at the town near Macon despite having Atlanta in its name.
Mayor Larry Collins said the music festival coincided with great changes caused by the civil rights movement, the hippie movement and the Vietnam War. He said he would like to see more events at the site.
Festivalgoer Willie Jones says it was the biggest crowd he's ever seen in Bryon. No one is sure exactly how many attended, but crowd estimates ranged from 200,000 to 500,000.
