It’s hard to stereotype a December graduate at Berry College — suffice to simply call the 120 graduates Saturday non-traditional.

Berry College Board of Trustees chairwoman Karen Holley Horrell said some pushed to get through college as fast as they could.

“Others followed a more scholarly bent. You’ve decided to soak up just a slight bit more knowledge for an extra semester or so,” Horrell said, without asking for a show of hands.

Horrell focused her commencement speech on gifts the students received while completing their degrees at Berry.

“Some gifts from a college experience are expected, some are unexpected,” Horrell said.

She told the Berry students that former Apple executive Steve Jobs, who never actually finished college, spoke of his fascination with a calligraphy class that developed a lifelong appreciation of the grace and beauty of fonts. It was that passion, Horrell said, that contributed to the design of so many Apple devices that are part of daily life.

“In this case, Jobs expected knowledge from his college education and got it in an unexpected way,” Horrell related.

The Cincinnati-based attorney said that the Berry experience strives to offer common skills such as critical thinking, clear communications and relationship building, as well as an appreciation of the beauty of the environment that surrounded their collegiate experience.

Melissa Jean Wallace, of Cartersville, speaking on behalf of the graduates, encouraged her fellow graduates to live the Berry motto, “Not to be ministered unto, but to minister.”

“Be that mentor, be that friend, be that co-worker that inspires those around you,” Wallace said.

Wallace suggested that while December graduates might be a little different, they share a common faith to step across the stage and entire the real world. She urged the graduating class to accept challenges of the future as opportunities to grow as a person and exhibit the kind of generosity that they have been taught at Berry.
