Clear Creek Middle School in Ellijay was the top finisher in Berry College’s Fall 2009 Sixth-Grade Mathematics Competition, with second and third going to First Presbyterian Day School in Macon and Jasper Middle School, respectively.
Individual winners, in order of finish, were Myles Southern (Clear Creek), Logan Fountain (Jasper) and Andi Torres (Pickens County Middle School).
Also participating were students from Armuchee Middle School, Coosa Middle School, Gilmer Middle School, Heritage Middle School (Ringgold), LaFayette Middle School, New Hope Middle School (Dalton), Pathway Christian School (East Point), Ringgold Middle School, St. Mary’s School of Rome, Sonoraville Middle School, Trion Middle School and Unity Christian School of Rome.
Berry College hosts the competition to promote and encourage mathematical excellence. Several Berry students and mathematics faculty assisted with the event. Katy Borek, a junior mathematics major and the daughter of Stanley and Michele Borek of Warner Robins, was the student coordinator. The faculty supervisor was Martha Tapia, associate professor of mathematics education.
