Because of the growing popularity of the monthly Cruise In, two blocks of East Third Avenue are blocked off tonight, in addition to two blocks of East Fourth Avenue, between Broad Street and East Second Street.
The classic car event will take place today from 5 to 9 p.m. It is the third of the summer. Previously, only Fourth Avenue was blocked off.
There were at least 152 cars from around the region for the July Cruise In, according to Elaine Abercrombie, who chairs the Downtown Development Authority’s Promotions Committee. Most of those are expected back today, and a classic car club from Alabama sent notice that they intend to bring 30 cars, Abercrombie said.
“At the first one, we thought we’d be excited if we had 50 or 60 cars,” she said. “We had 112.” Abercrombie said one classic car owner was asked at the first Cruise In how much money he wanted for it before he could even get out of the car.
The owners love to swap information, like where to find parts, she said.
The event is planned on the second Saturday of each month and will continue through Oct. 10. It is free to classic car owners and the public. Cars must be manufactured before 1975 to be considered classic.
