Board members are giving a close review to the proposed $45.8 million spending plan for 2013, looking for expenses to cut and areas where revenue could be raised.
The document is slated for adoption at their second meeting in January. No property tax increase is planned.
During their 1 p.m. caucus today, commissioners are scheduled to discuss how they’ll replace County Manager Blaine Williams, who is resigning effective Dec. 31 to work for Athens-Clarke County.
Commission Chairman Irwin Bagwell said he expects the opening to be advertised nationally, but with just three weeks until Williams’ departure it’s likely an interim manager will have to be named.
Williams had been assistant county manager for nearly five years when he took over the interim slot before being named county manager in January. He hired Assistant County Manager Noah Simon in March.
Also during their caucus, commissioners are planning to consider a policy for leasing space on the new emergency communications system towers. The countywide system funded through the 2009 special purpose, local option sales tax is starting to come online.
“The time to set up a good policy is on the front end, and not let it evolve as you go,” Williams said.
At its regular 2 p.m. business meeting, the board is expected to award a contract to install water lines along Ga. 156 to connect with the city of Calhoun’s system.
Williams said the county will be able to buy water from Calhoun at a starting price of $1.40 per 1,000 gallons, compared to $3.14 per 1,000 gallons from the city of Rome. The county also has contracts with Adairsville, at $1.47 per 1,000 gallons, to supplement its groundwater sources.
The board meets at the County Administration Building, 12 E. Fourth Ave. All three sessions are open to the public.
