A building permit has been issued for Shorter University’s new residence hall. Workers are moving power lines and sewer lines to get ready for construction, according to Dawn Tolbert, a spokesman for the university.

Plans are to have the estimated $2.2 million residence hall open for students to move in early next year.

The 100-bed building will be located behind the Sheffield-Thompson Building between the Newman Hall and Hazel Eubanks Hall residence facilities.

Shorter’s continued record enrollment prompted the new building. “Shorter has had tremendous growth, and in the fall of 2011, our record enrollment included approximately 120 students who wanted to live on campus that we were unable to accommodate with on-campus housing,” said Dr. Don Dowless, Shorter’s president.
