Sophomore Justyna Mudy dominated the field by nearly 45 seconds and sophomore Sarah Massey posted a 13th-place finish to lead No. 24 Shorter College to a third place finish in the 2009 Women's Southeastern Classic at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
Mudy, the defending SSAC Runner of the Year, torched the talented group of competitors, posting a time of 17:18.76 to win the event. Second place finisher Violet Mokaya of Con-cordia University crossed the line in 18:03.04.
Massey completed the 5k course in 19:23.07. Junior Kaitlin Shaw placed 28th with a time of 19:52.99 and freshman Pau-lina Sarat (20:14.72) and senior Amy Worthy (20:20.73) placed 35th and 36th, respectively, to round out Shorter's top five.
Concordia took first place with 66 points and Embry-Riddle University placed second with 88 tallies. Shorter's 110 points were 14 better than fourth place Berry College (124) and Lee University finished fifth with 169.
Shorter's third place women's finish, coupled with the Hawk harriers' second place effort allowed Shorter to retain the coveted Marcellus Gallio Award, a trophy that travels between Shorter and Berry College and is given to the school with the lowest combined score at the Southeastern Classic.
