A prisoner who led police on a months long chase when he escaped from Hays State Prison last year could face a kidnapping trial as early as next week in Chattooga County Superior Court.

Johnny Mack Brown has been indicted on felony charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping, escape and burglary.

Brown, 52, was serving a life sentence plus 70 years for armed robbery when he and another inmate escaped from Hays State Prison in Chattooga County on Oct. 13. He later kidnapped a Summerville woman — who escaped uninjured — but was captured in November.

The other escapee, Michael Twedell, was captured in February.

Brown and Tweedell escaped from Hays State Prison by climbing atop a dormitory building to avoid an interior fence and scaling two perimeter fences and eight strands of razor wire.

Because of his violent history, Brown had been placed on the U.S. Marshals’ 15 Most Wanted list, with a $25,000 reward offered for his recapture.
