Cave Spring Elementary School student Claire Fortenberry was an illustration of one of the greatest lines in all of literature — “I do not like green eggs and ham I do not like them Sam-I-Am.”

Dressed in green and carrying a plate of make-believe green eggs and a sign that said “Sam-I-Am,” Fortenberry was one of the winners of the costume contest at the school on Friday.

Just a few minutes later, students were able to “Try them, try them and you may. Try them and you may I say!”

In honor of Dr. Seuss’ 109th birthday, students were served green eggs and ham for lunch.

Dr. Seuss is the author of the book “Green Eggs and Ham.”

The kids were not fooled by the eggs’ green color.

“It’s food coloring,” said kindergartner Cohen Youngblood as he heartily ate the green concoction on his plate.

But kindergartner Bobby Settlemoire was firmly in the camp of those who would not eat them anywhere — in a box or even with a fox.

When asked what caused him to avoid the green eggs, Bobby said, “the taste.”

Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, wrote more than 60 books, including “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Horton Hears a Who” and “The Lorax.”

His birthday, which is actually today, is celebrated as Read Across American Day.

The Cave Spring celebration included a parade of children dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters, the green eggs and ham lunch and cupcakes with red and white frosting that were handed out to each student and staff member.
