The Rome City Commission will get an update tonight on construction progress at the new Anna K. Davie Elementary School.

The $11 million school will be bounded by Pennington Avenue and South Broad, East Main and West Glover streets — but a few needed parcels have yet to be acquired. City Manager John Bennett is scheduled to brief the board on plans to overcome that hurdle.

Carrolton-based J&R Construction was awarded the bid in September but, because of the property-acquisition delay, the building isn’t expected to be ready for classes until early 2014.

Commissioners also are slated to accept a $2.3 million bid from Marietta-based Heavy Constructors Inc. to replace the 72-year-old flash mix tank at the Hamler Water Treatment Plant and add a CO2 alkalinity adjustment system.

The water department project is being funded through a 20-year state loan at a 2.13 percent interest rate. The reduced rate was granted because Rome is a certified Water First community.

The board meets at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 601 Broad St., following a 5 p.m. caucus in which Trey Smith and Harry Brock are scheduled to make a bicycle safety presentation. Both sessions are open to the public.
