The cost for a class designed to teach teens how to stay safe while driving has been reduced.

On Jan. 31 and Feb. 2, the Rome Police Department will host “Fear This,” a safe driving class for teenagers.

The class fee was $150 for a team that includes a parent and a student. But thanks to a donation, that cost has been reduced to $125 by check and $130 by PayPal, according to Maj. Denise Downer-McKinney of the Rome Police Department.

Anyone who has already paid $150 will be refunded the difference, she said.

The class is similar to the defensive driving class police officers have to take, according to Downer-McKinney.

“Parents are also required to attend and they provide their own vehicle,” Downer-McKinney said. “Parents also get behind the wheel and see what the teens are doing.”

The police department is not making money from the classes, she said.

“We are looking at this as a partnership,” Downer-McKinney said. “It’s a joint effort (with Fear This) to try to reduce teen fatalities.”

Teens must have a learner’s permit or license and be between ages 15 and 19.

The classroom portion will be Jan. 31 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Rome City Municipal Courtroom.

The  hands-on training  session will be at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport on Feb. 2 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1 to 5:30 p.m.

Class size is limited to 40 teams. A Sunday class will be added if Saturday is filled.
