It’s Halloween in Rome and the Downtown Development Authority really got into the spirit Friday during its monthly Coffee Break.

More than half of those in the dining room at Opi’s Buck & Duke Country Saloon donned costumes, and since much of the discussion centered on the slate of holiday activities coming up in downtown Rome — including today’s Downtown Trick or Treat — the fun-filled celebration fit the bill.

Among the most notable costumed were the staff of Seven Hills Salon who came as characters from the “The Wizard of Oz” with Cindy Carnes’ portrayal of the Wicked Witch and Brandi Camp’s Lollipop Kid winning prizes for “Scariest” and “Funniest,” respectively. The Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority staffers garnered the “Most Original” as “party people” while the “Sexiest” prizewinner was Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s Gail Johnson portraying a feather boa-and-boot-clad gal in search of Girls Gone Wild.

“Best Costume” honors were awarded to Jeanne Cahill as Olive Oyl — complete with packaged spinach — who was in search of her sailor. “I’m still trying to get Popeye off the Girls Gone Wild bus,” she said to hearty laughs from the group.

The meeting was spent going over the wide array of events to come over the next month.

Today downtown businesses will welcome youngsters costumed as everything from ghouls and goblins to princesses and pirates for trick or treating from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. while the Seven Hills Tellers will regale listeners with scary stories tonight at the Hallowed Hauntings of Chieftains starting at 8 p.m.

Other downtown events of note include the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce’s Business Expo that kicks off with the Business After Hours event for members Friday followed by the main Expo for the public scheduled 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 7.

That same day, downtown merchants will play host to the Downtown Sidewalk Sale that will allow you to shop along Broad Street while you enjoy music and the works of local artists.

Then on Nov. 13-14, they’ll welcome locals and visitors for the Downtown Christmas Open House.

Paula Blevins, of C&S Trophies and the DDA Coffee Break emcee, said, “The open house is the best time to invite people to come downtown to shop” and get the Christmas spirit going. She said the open house would feature horse and carriage rides, kiddie train rides and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Another holiday event to mark on calendars is the Downtown Rome Christmas Parade scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1.
