The Darlington Tigers have been full of surprises this season — and on Friday night they pulled off their biggest shocker yet.
Click here for Prep Central.Fueled by a defense that forced three turnovers and a freshman quarterback who played with tremendous poise, the Tigers stunned Commerce, 28-14, in the second round of the Class A football playoffs at Chris Hunter Stadium.
Darlington quarterback Brad Butler completed 9-of-12 passes for 103 yards for the Tigers (8-4), who opened the season with three straight losses but have won eight of their past nine.
In Class AA action, the top-ranked Calhoun Yellow Jackets likewise kept alive their hopes of winning a state title by rolling past North Oconee, 39-14.
The victory was highlighted by a huge effort from Hunter Knight, who blocked three punts — all of them coming in the game’s first 12 minutes.
Calhoun and Darlington are now headed to the quarterfinals, with the Jackets facing Jefferson County, and Darlington meeting Twiggs County. Both local teams won coin tosses Saturday morning and will be playing at home on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
In other action Friday night, top-ranked Cherokee County (Ala.) continued its undefeated season with a 56-32 win over North Jackson.
Cherokee County will play Deshler next week in the semifinals. It will be a rematch of last year’s semifinal game, when Cherokee downed Deshler.
