Ray Dempsey has been a part of the company that his father Sproull Dempsey started in 1965; Lynn joined the company in 1973.
Ray Dempsey started out by selling hot dogs and popcorn as well as helping set up the big auction tents as a youngster. He obtained a real estate brokers license in 1966.
“It’s just recognition by your peers, respect is a very important thing for all of us, and feeling that respect and experiencing that respect was a very special thing,” said Lynn Dempsey. “Probably the most important thing it means is what we do for our clients. This is a very personal business because a lot of times we are working through a very tough time for people, a family situation, an estate-type situation, a lot of times there is a lot of pressure to perform for your clients. It’s the greatest thing in the world when it works.”
Lynn Dempsey said that a successful auction could be a very uplifting experience for people who are hurting for whatever reason.
One of the greatest challenges facing the auctioneer, according to Lynn Dempsey, is to get a huge crowd together who want to get a bargain at sale, and at the same time, making sure the seller gets the highest amount possible.
Both of the Dempsey brothers have been very active members of the statewide industry organization. Lynn Dempsey has served the state auctioneers as president.
The Dempsey brothers were formally honored at the GAA Summer Conference on Tybee Island earlier this month.
