The men and women who served their country will have their commitment and service in the armed forces remembered Sunday as several Veterans Day events are planned.

Rome’s 89th annual Veterans Day ceremony will take place Sunday at 11 a.m. at Myrtle Hill Cemetery as Pearl Harbor survivor Bob Kerr of Atlanta relates his account of what happened on the Hawaiian island of Oahu on Dec. 7, 1941.

Kerr, 92, who is originally from Punxsutawney, Pa., was in his barracks when the Japanese began their attack and bombarded the base, sparking the United States to officially enter into World War II.

The Model High School band will provide music before and during the ceremony and a traditional 21-gun salute will be followed by the release of white doves.

The commemoration will be followed by a luncheon at the Shanklin-Attaway American Legion Post 5 on Shorter Avenue.

People who visit the cemetery early will be witness to a special tree dedication sponsored by a local veterans group.

The Veterans Memorial tree dedication will begin at 10 a.m. and the public is invited to attend.

Also commemorating Veterans Day will be Chapel Hill United Methodist Church on Kingston Highway.

The church’s normal Sunday service at 11 a.m. will be dedicated to veterans and feature guest speaker retired Command Sgt. Maj. Eric L. Haney.

Haney served in the Army for 20 years as a combat infantryman, as a ranger, and ultimately, as a founding member and eight-year veteran of the army’s super secret counter-terrorism arm, Delta Force.

His time serving in the special-ops group is documented in his book “Inside Delta Force” and was the basis for the CBS drama “The Unit,” for which Haney was a writer and producer.

A barbecue lunch will follow the service.
