ON THE GREATER ROME SCENE there are no governmental problems and concerns, no citizens who believe they have better ideas to share. (This is sarcasm, by the way.) That’s evidenced by the extreme shortage of opposition in local political election races this year.

Frankly, when the headline-grabbing campaign news becomes whether or not a candidate for sheriff could or could not raffle off a shotgun at a fundraiser, only a sense of civic duty is left to encourage voter participation.

By the way, what’s the “message” in making the prize a shotgun? Citizens are on their own in defending their castles and need to be armed at all times? Wouldn’t raffling off a home-security system be both more civilized and effective?
