The “Turning Point” program at the County Jail was recently featured on the A&E channel’s “Beyond Scared Straight” show and portrayed some pretty stern stuff as deputies aided by actual inmates gave teenagers a heavy dose of the reality of what to expect if they make bad choices.
To this the sheriff has just added a similar “reality experience” for teens who have been told/instructed as to the perils of driving while intoxicated but may shrug off such warnings as adult scare tactics.
In cooperation with the Pepperell High chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) the Floyd County Sheriff Department has purchased a golf cart to be used, along with goggles that distort reality, to show teens what it is like to drive to drive while impaired by alcohol or narcotics.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure — or a jail sentence, or being smeared all over a roadway.
