The word equinox comes from the Latin words for “equal night.” The fall and spring equinoxes are the only days of the year in which the sun crosses the celestial equator. On the equinoxes, the very center of the sun sets just 12 hours after it rises.
Rome and Floyd County will be a little warm for a fall day, with the National Weather Service predicting a high of 85 degrees today. There is a 20 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms after 3 p.m., but the chances go down throughout the evening. Tonight’s weather should be clear, with a low temperature of 51 degrees.
A sunny Sunday will bring some more fall-like weather, according to the NWS. Sunday’s high is predicted to be about 76 degrees, with possible wind gusts of much as 20 mph. Sunday night’s forecast includes clear skies and a low of about 47 degrees.
Monday’s high is forecast at about 77 degrees, but the rest of the week looks to be warming, with the NWS calling for highs in the 80s through at least Friday.
