New concert tour set by Boys’ Choir

Choir officials at the Rome Boys’ Club are completing plans for the group’s third annual concert tour, which will again take the boys into cities in Georgia and Florida.

The possibility of a northern tour was considered at one time, but officials voted to travel south again this year since the choir has been invited to the National Convention of Boys’ Clubs in 1964.

Meanwhile, William R. Dixon, director of the Boys’ Club Choir, announces that Andrew Akin, Mike Baker, Randy Durham, Tony Fuller, Jim Heard, Tom Heard and Ricky Loftin have been approved as choir members following recent auditions. Their enrollment brings to 62 the present choir membership.

No more tryouts will be held until September following the summer program. The Boys’ Choir has been learning a new series of numbers to be used in the spring concert and summer concert tour.

The Boys’ Choir received a high honor recently by having their recording played during the month of December at the National Headquarters in New York City.

In cooperation with a national recording company’s search for the six best Boys’ Club choirs over the nation, the Rome Boys’ Club choirs over the nation, the Rome Boys’ Club has submitted application for the contest. On Jan. 15 a committee will select the six best individual musicians or choral groups to be used in production of a national recording. The winners will receive royalties, prestige and an expense-paid trip to national conventions.

They left their farm in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – This city had two farms. Now it has one.

The brothers Demattei – James and Antonio – finally gave up their five-acre plot in the 100 block of Williams Avenue in the Bayview District.

Antonio Barbiera still farms his three-acre plot alongside speeding traffic on Bayshore Freeway.

The Demattei plot became a big a parking lot.

Garden Lakes Club holds contest on biscuits, muffins

A biscuit and muffin contest was held at the meeting of the Garden Lakes Girls’ 4-H Club. Girls had baked their entries ahead of the meeting and presented them to be judged.

Winners in the muffin contest were Myscal Gray, first; Fredda Doss, second and Brenda Goree, third. Biscuit baking winners were Linda Brown, first; Nancy Lynch, second and Penny Andrews and Paula St. Clair, third.

Mrs. Margaret Gayler, home demonstration agent, gave out the record books for the year, and the program for the month was “How We Use Our Hands.”

Civitan Club to recognize All-Floyd basketball teams

The Rome Civitan Club today announced plans to recognize the first annual Floyd County Boys and Girls All-Star basketball teams at a dinner on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

A selection committee, working with recommendations from county coaches and other selected individuals, will announce its five-player boys’ and six-player girls’ teams on February 5.

Based on regular season play, East Rome and Cave Spring could easily dominate the girls’ team, while it appears that the boys’ squad may be a real mixture.

Another girl that has caught the fancy of the committee is East Rome guard Janice Johnston, who was injured recently and will not be able to return. She was an all-state performer last year and must be considered for this honor despite the early-season injury.

There are numerous girl players in the county who may walk away with honors, including Johnson’s Lannis Johnson, West Rome’s Linda Lippencott and East Rome’s Susan Gresham.

The official list of contenders will not be released until later but these girls are almost sure bets to be in contention

all the way.

The five-player boys’ squad may be quite a bit harder to choose than the girls due to the fact that the county has a number of boys capable of making the team and only five spots to fill.

Vann Gray and Buddy Copeland of West Rome; Jerry Rucker, Coosa; Billy Langson, Cave Spring; Jimmy Stansell and Harry Bailey of Johnson; Tommy Kiser and Randy Dixon of Model; Doug Loan, Berry; J.W. Bridges, Armuchee; Johnny Mathis, Pepperell and many others.

The selected players will be the guests of the Civitan Club at their luncheon meeting, Feb. 12 at noon.

This marks the second civic club in Rome to select all-star teams. The Rome Kiwanis last November named an All-Area all-star football squad. Both clubs hope to make these annual projects – recognizing the outstanding athletes in the Rome area.

The Kiwanis Club all-star selections met with popular approval as some of the top gridders in the area were honored at a banquet, and Civitan officials believe the naming of a basketball star team will be another step toward making Rome the “sports center of Northwest Georgia.”
