Rome’s Historic Preservation Commission has approved plans for a facelift at 244 Broad St., the Lynn’s Uniforms building.

“The city asked us to do something so we got some guidance from the Downtown Development Authority and we’re hoping to some money to get things looking nice,” said Hardy Realty’s Jimmy Kelly, speaking on behalf of the estate that owns the property.

HPC Director Delmos Stone also told the board that the DDA is making some financial assistance available for the project.

Plans for the facelift include a complete pressure washing of the façade, removal of the plywood, aluminum awning and sign, as well as replacement of the transom windows.

Kelly said the work, expected to cost no more than $7,500, should get under way as early as next week.

The HPC also approved plans for the replacement of a retaining wall on property at 501 E. Third St.

Van McMeekin, a Cedartown-based contractor, told the board that plans also call for construction of a brick fireplace that would replace a brick column on the Fifth Avenue frontage of the property.

“We’re kind of shooting from the hip with some of this, but it’s definitely an improvement,” McMeekin said.

The budget for the project is estimated at $15,000.

McMeekin said he would probably be back to the HPC next month with plans for repairs to another crumbling retaining wall on the opposite side of the home owned by Dr. Matthew Cornforth.
