It is amazing to me that our elected officials spend their time debating whether to allow folks to keep backyard chickens. Why is a permit not required to own a dog, cat, rodent or — YIKES! — a snake?

All create problems, noise and potential disease. Not so with hens; even their excrement is beneficial for creating compost and building fertile, healthy soil. Have any of you negative city commissioners even visited a backyard flock? Their abode is probably cleaner than any dog pen, and the delightful clucking girls eat ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. Mr. Lewis’ chickens are indeed a learning experience for his homeschooled children to witness bio-recycling in action.

Rather than denying homeowners the chance to improve their lives by raising backyard chickens, you should encourage more people to raise micro-flocks. Feeding chicks’ kitchen scraps and creating compost from yard weeds, leaves and chicken manure can divert bio-mass from landfills and save taxpayer dollars. Backyard chickens are indeed a win-win situation. I know, I’ve been raising chickens for 20 years.
