First, take a page from Ronald Reagan’s playbook and have the Air Force perform strategic air strikes at the homes of the leaders of each country. I realize this may not be practical but it sure did quiet down Muammar Gaddafi, for a few decades.
Second, immediately suspend all foreign aid to any country participating in these acts. I propose that whenever a U.S. flag is burned, and innocent U.S. citizen is kidnapped or murdered, or when a U.S. embassy or consulate is attacked all foreign aid be stopped, until the leader of that country publicly denounces the violence and gets things under control. Some might argue that these are usually extremists and don’t represent the populist movement of a nation. I would argue that these governments need to do a better job identifying the extremists and defusing these situations before they occur.
In most cases the U.S. knows who the demonstrators are while the host country is clueless. Today these governments face no consequences for the actions of their people. Yet, as Americans, we face the debt of foreign aid we give these nations, with money we are borrowing, just to watch their countrymen denounce the United States on world news and kill our citizens and soldiers.
If these countries don’t want us there then they must not want our food, our money, or our military support. We should allow their extremists to feed their hungry, bankroll their governments and fight their wars.
I am appalled by the actions these countries have taken over a movie. I am angry they burn our flag in the streets. Most of all I am enraged over the fact that our diplomats were killed. At some point the United States needs to hold governments accountable. Yesterday was a good day to start.
