I AM WRITING in regards to the letter writer that stated he was appalled by the Democratic Convention leaving out the word “God.” I personally think politics and religion should be separate. He mentioned that America was formed by God but if I remember correctly , our ancestors came to America because they wanted religious freedom and separation from state.
Never have they tried to make it law that anyone serve one religion. But from most of the history I have learned in my life time. It would be hard to say that any one group came here for freedom of religion. Most came here for a new start in a country where land was for sale or could be claimed for the taking. Coming from countries that were very old all the land was owned and controlled. Most people came for the right to make their own life free from the controls of the super rich of that time. My father and his father were preachers. He told me stories of getting the wagon together so they could start before day light to go to town to have church. People took food with them because getting to church, having the meeting then geting home took all day. So they only had it once a month. Not much of a way to demand anything of these people that far apart.
Puritans...you mean the ones that fled England because the monarchy also controlled the church...the ones whose historic landing at Plymouth Rock we celebrate every November...
Those were the Pilgrims. They were the ones who landed at Plymouth. The Puritans came later, landed at Massachusetts Bay, and were intolerant of anyone else's differences in faity.
