It is such a shame that we have to read in the Sunday newspaper that once again, Rep. Katie Dempsey has to be fed another meal for her and her husband, Lynn Dempsey. This time the bill comes to $181.44. Where do they eat? In Paris, France?

We Romans send her to the state House at her request and at the request of her fellow Republicans, and yet she cannot seem to just go there and represent us. She cannot turn down a big, fancy meal and apparently, that is not all. What else has she done with the rest of the total of $768.97 which is not shared with us readers on Sunday?

However, the real point is why she must partake of lobbyists’ money at all?

Of course, it does not compare to that of David Ralston’s lobbyist’s money — in 2010, it was about $50,000. Yet, that session, we remember that Rep. Dempsey got a 10th of that money, didn’t she?

It seems to me that for 40 days in the House, one really needs no extra money to get the job done. Why do we put up with it at election time, year after year? If Rep. Dempsey’s Cheshire Cat’s smiling face would care to respond to this particular question — what do we get out of it? It might make the reading of it in our Rome News-Tribune a little more palatable.

Love the Cheshire cat analogy. Can RN-T not get another photo of this woman? The legislators should not get a dime for going to Atlanta if the people's/state's interest was REALLY the reason they want to be there.

I have had enough of the grumpy, mad at the world types throwing the baby out with the bathwater on public officials. Katie Dempsey is a great State Rep and an honorable public servant. The notion that she can be influenced by a meal is insulting. Rep. Dempsey holds a lot influence at the Capitol that is very helpful to our community. I, for one, am so proud of her and her accomplishments on our behalf. She had had my vote from the beginning and still does!

Just thinking politically. Would she/they have spent that amount if it were coming out of their pocket. If so would that determine as to how much respect would be given. Most folks don'T HAVE TO BUY respect.......

Politics vs Joke, Joke vs Politics.....It's all ridiculously funny.

If meals, sports tickets, theater tickets, cigars (for the late Tom Murphy) had no influence on our politicians, why would businesses contribute them?

How much serious discussion of policies is going to occur at Agatha's Dinner Theater or a Braves game?

If our politicians want to show that their vote can't be bought for a trifle, let them refuse these gifts.

As Susan Daniel points out, it's not uncommon for lobbyists to fete not only the politicians, but their spouses.

"Now Lynn, dear, would you mind going to the little boys' room while we discuss politics?"
