MY TWO nephews and I recently purchased two items at a local home improvement store. My nephew was holding the bag as we got to the door to leave and store employee approached us and asked what was in the bag. I asked her, “When did they start doing that?”

I got no response. My nephew opened the bag to let her see, and she took the item out and walked off.

I went to her and asked for the item back and she refused to give it back. I asked for the store manager. A gentleman came up to us, who I found out later was the assistant store manager. I explained to him what happened.

He stated they had the right to search bags, so I asked him were they supposed to take your item(s) out of the bag and refuse to give it back. I got no response. My nephew asked him why he didn’t stop the white couple in front of us who had purchased an item and did not have it in a bag.

We got no response. I asked him to check the cameras. I requested he return the item we purchased and he did. We did not get an apology. We were embarrassed and humiliated.

Later, the store manager, called me at home and wanted me to come into the store to discuss what happened. I did not want to go, but I went, and got humiliated again. She offered a discount which wasn’t worth the embarrassment we had gone through.

She then stated that a person working in customer service has a right to check your bags if they don’t see you pay. I hope she doesn’t think I believe that!

If you are black and go to this store, listen up: If you purchase an item and have already paid for it, expect to be stopped by a person in customer service and they will check your bag and take all of the items out. I will never shop at that store again
