Holly Bawden recorded her second double-double of the season with a game-high 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead Shorter College to a 52-41 victory over NCAA Division II University of West Alabama on Tuesday afternoon.

The win was the third straight for the Lady Hawks, who improved to 3-1 on their current five-game road trip.

The Lady Hawks were once again relentless on the defensive end of the floor, smothering the Tigers into 21.5 percent shooting for the game while giving up only eight free throw attempts to the hosts.

The Lady Hawks entered the contest ranked eighth in the NAIA in field goal percentage defense.

Shorter held West Alabama leading scorer Brittany Yeager to six points and two rebounds - she came into the game averaging 15.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest.

Bawden proved to be Yeager’s foil, scoring nine of her points and snaring seven of her rebounds in the second half.

Bawden’s jumper with 10:28 remaining in the second half broke a 34-34 tie and ignited a 12-0 run that was capped by a Kelly Ellison three-pointer, putting Shorter up 46-34 with 3:48 remaining in the game.

West Alabama (2-7) responded with a mini 5-0 spurt to crawl back within 46-39 with 2:04 to play, but Bawden connected on a layup following a Lady Hawk timeout to push Shorter’s advantage back to nine, 48-39, with 1:23 left.

Shorter led 24-20 after a seesaw first half that witnessed five ties and six lead changes. The Tigers led by as much as three and the Lady Hawks by as many as five in the frame.

The Lady Hawks scored the first five points of the second half courtesy of a Bawden field goal and Ashley Harris three-pointer to gain some cushion.

Harris and Brittney Smith finished with nine points apiece for Shorter, which improves to 7-4 overall. Tamara Weatherby posted eight points and five rebounds and Tabatha Jenkins added seven points and eight rebounds.

Shorter shot 44.4 percent from the floor and out rebounded the Tigers 47-35.

Dakota Powell led West Alabama with 11 points.

The Lady Hawks will take time off for the holiday break and will close out their road trip on Jan. 4 when they travel to Waleska, Ga., for a date with Reinhardt College at 6 p.m. ET.
