Committing 25 turnovers, the Shorter Lady Hawks fell to Georgia State, 66-39, in a preseason game Wednesday night in Atlanta.

Georgia State, which ranked No. 10 in the nation in steals last year, came up with 16 steals and six blocked shots while holding Shorter to 27.7 percent shooting and just 39 points.

Senior forward Danyiell McKeller paced the Lady Panthers with 17 points and five steals.

Shorter, which opens the season Friday at home against Reinhardt College, was led by Kelly Ellison’s nine points.

Georgia State used a 13-2 run to build a 24-9 advantage with 8:20 left in the first half. Shorter made a run in the final four minutes of the half, pulling within 32-23 at halftime.

The host Lady Panthers led 35-27 lead at 18:44 of the second half, but stretched the lead to 46-29 with an 11-2 surge. Shorter did not draw closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Henry was pleased with the play of Angelique Burtts, the Rockdale County High alum, as she got 35 minutes of time and had just one turnover.

“Angelique is the type player who can do it all,” Henry said. “She was poised and showed her versatility on offense and defense. Angelique plays hard and will be a major contributor for us.”
