The Lindale Star, the lighted symbol that has shone above the small town every Christmas but one since 1931, has been turned on for the season. It will continue to shine from dusk to dawn each night until about the second week of January, according to Jim Mehaffey with the Lindale Star Committee.
“We want people to know it’s on again and shining for another year,” he said.
The star, which was once hung between the smokestacks of the old Lindale Manufacturing plant before it was shut down in 2002, now has a permanent home on Eden Mountain and can be seen from the Lindale Village and the area around the old factory.
“It’s a tradition down here and one that has been kept alive since the mill closed down,” Mehaffey said.
He said the committee continues to get support and donations from not just the people of Rome and Floyd County but also from those around the country who still have ties to Lindale and remember the star.
Mehaffey said if anyone would like to contribute to help keep the star on they could mail checks, payable to the Lindale Star Committee, to P.O. Box 573, Lindale, GA 30147.
“Every contribution we get is spent on the star and the upkeep of the star,” he said.
After years of helping make the annual symbol a reality, Mehaffey said he would like for a local organization to take on the star as a club project and possibly get it listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
