A senior from Atlanta, Abrams led the Vikings with a 15.2 scoring average — which was third best in the SAA. A guard, he also averaged 4.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists each game. Abrams tallied a career best 29 points against Millsaps on Feb. 15. He scored in double figures 22 times this year.
“Jon really put together a solid season for us,” said interim head coach derek Taylor. “He improved his 3-point shooting, which meant teams had to guard him closer on the perimeter. This opened up more driving lanes for him, and with his first step he became of the most difficult players in the league to defend one-on-one. For someone who has had to play most of his college career without any honors or accolades (because of Berry’s conference/division switch), I am very pleased to to see him get this well-deserved recognition.”
SAA honors Lady Vikings
The Southern Athletic Association has released the 2012-13 Women’s Basketball All Conference Teams. Chanlir Segarra and Megan Walsh of Berry College earned All-SAA recognition.
A sophomore from Cooper City, Fla., Segarra led the Vikings with a 17.2 scoring average — which was third-best in the SAA. A guard, she also averaged 5.1 assists 3.3 rebounds for the Vikings. Segarra tallied a career-best 33 points in a win over LaGrange (11-24-12). She had 33 points vs. Birmingham Southern in the first round of the SAA tournament last week.
Walsh, a junior from Acworth, was tabbed honorable mention by the SAA. The forward averaged 9.9 points, and a team-best 7.5 rebounds for BC. Walsh snagged 20 rebounds in a win over Hendrix (1-6-13).
“I am very pleased that the SAA coaches honored the performances put forth by Chanlir and Megan this season,” said Berry head coach Stephanie Dunn. “They played long and hard minutes in an effort to help their team win games this season. Chanlir played every game with passion and a skill set she worked on for hours every day in the off-season, and it paid off as she was one of the best on the court this season. Megan learned how to be consistent and answered the call many times this year when her team needed her. I’m very proud for them to be recognized alongside the best players in our conference.”
Berry finished the 2012-13 season with a 13-14 record. The Vikings lost to Millsaps in the SAA semifinals Saturday.
