Making his first college start, O’Connell worked seven innings, allowing four runs — only one earned — and took the loss.
Former Rome High star Stephen Gaylor had three stolen bases for the Vikings (4-6, 1-1).
Berry’s lone run of the day came on a Nick Stidham RBI single in the sixth. Austin Neely had two hits on the day for the Vikings.
Berry and Hendrix will wrap up this three-game series today at 1 p.m.
BERRY GOLF
Oglethorpe University, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III golf poll, shot a first round 292 and leads the Callaway Collegiate by 10 strokes.
Host Berry College and Huntingdon both fired 311 and are sixth.
Berry finishes were: Alex Irvin 39-37-76; Tommy McCloskey 37-39-76; Alex Elmore 38-41-79; John Hall 41-39-80; Ty Hampel 41-44-85.
The final round starts at 9:30 a.m. today.
SHORTER LACROSSE
James VandenBrink scored five goals, Matt Kristiansen amassed seven total points and Kyle VanKauwenberg and Patrick Foy netted four goals each as Shorter’s men’s lacrosse team rolled to a 27-9 victory over visiting Alderson-Broaddus on Saturday at Ben Brady Field.
Shorter (2-2) won its second straight while setting a program record for goals in a game. Seven Hawks scored multiple goals in a strong team effort that saw Shorter assist on 19 of its 27 tallies.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Lindenwood (Mo.).
BERRY MEN’S LACROSSE
Virgnia Wesleyan defeated Berry College’s men’s lacrosse team, 11-10 in overtime on Saturday in a neutral site game.
The loss is the first for Berry and they fell to 3-1. VWC is also 3-1 after the win.
Bryan Byers paced the Viking offense with three goals.
Teammate Kyle Lombardi scored opening goal of the game. Additionally, he tallied to with 14 seconds remaining in regulation to force the overtime period.
Berry next faces Wittenberg (Ohio) in Clearwater, Fla. on Wednesday.
SHORTER BASEBALL
Limited to two hits, Shorter was saddled with a 10-0 loss to North Alabama in the Hawks’ first conference game as a GSC member.
Shorter fell to 1-12 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Shorter’s two hits came in the first two innings as the Hawks were unable to capitalize on some early momentum.
Cal Hardie led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a Jesse Gavigan walk, but both were stranded. An inning later, Darius Jennings singled and moved into scoring position on a Charlie Gillis ground out, but was also left on base.
Shorter and UNA will wrap up their three-game set tomorrow, Sunday, March 3, with a double header beginning at 1 pm ET.
BERRY TENNIS
Berry College lost to Aquinas College, 8-1, to open its spring break trip to Florida. The only win for the Vikings was at #6 singles where Jake Pullen prevailed.
Berry dropped to 1-1. Aguinas, ranked #9 in the NAIA, improved to 4-3
