Local Colleges: Lady Vikings sweep Covenant

The Berry College softball team swept Covenant by scores of 10-0 and 8-2 on Wednesday.

The Vikings have now won its six straight games and improved to 6-2 on the season. The Scots dropped to 0-6.

Game one was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule. The Vikes scored three times in the first inning and never looked back. BC recorded 13 hits in the game.

Abby Daniels and Jessica Washington had monster games at the plate for Berry. Washington was 3-4 with a double, one triple two runs scored and had three RBI. Daniels had three doubles, a run and knocked in four for base runners for the visitors.

Caillee Shamoun (3-1) had her second straight shut out. She scattered five hits and struck out one Covenant batter.

In the nightcap, Berry's bats stayed hot as they collected 11 hits. The Vikings tallied six runs in the second frame, and added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Washington went 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and had one RBI. Sara Vigue was 2-4 with a double.

Freshman Allison Coronado (2-1) earned the win for Berry. Natalie Boyd tossed the last four innings and earned her first save of the season.

The Vikings travel to California and face Chapman College on Saturday at 7 and 9 p.m.

LACROSSE

Berry College improved to 3-0 after winning at Piedmont College, 12-4, on Wednesday.

"The defense played well today and it's good to get off to a 3-0 start," said BC Head Coach Chris Delfausse. "It's always nice to beat an in-state rival, too, but we didn't play our best today. We need to put out a better effort to beat Virginia Wesleyan next week in Charlotte."

All three goalkeepers played in the game for Berry. Jordan Boreman (3-0) started and got the win.

Piedmont lost its second straight game and dropped to 3-2.
