The Berry men’s basketball team was victimized by an improbable play on Friday night at The Cage Center.

The Vikings suffered a 70-68 loss to Millsaps when Ryan Berger scored the winning layup for the visitors on a 70-foot inbounds pass.

Jonathan Abrams scored a career-high 29 points for Berry. Freshmen Devan Bruce and Jordan Teems had 11 and 10 points respectively for the Vikings.

Berry fell to 5-19 on the season and 2-11 in SAA games. Millsaps upped its record to 5-19 and 3-10.

Abrams was fouled with less than two seconds left. He missed the first, but made the second shot. The Majors’ Tulley Gilligan quickly grabbed the ball for the inbounds and threw long strike to Berger who made the shot just before time expired.

Berry will close out both its regular season and home schedule on Sunday against Birmingham-Southern at 3 p.m.

BERRY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Berry women’s basketball team lost to Southern Athletic Association opponent Millsaps, 65-53, on Friday.

Berry’s Megan Walsh paced all scorers with 19 points and had eight rebounds.

Berry fell to 11-13 overall and 5-8 in SAA games. Millsaps improved to 15-8 and 11-2.

Former Coosa star Mel McLean finished with 16 for Berry and former Model star Alexa Evans had 11. Sophomore Chanlir Segarra, Berry’s leading scorer, was held without a point for the first time in her career.

Berry will close out its regular season on Sunday against Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m.

BERRY BASEBALL

Casey Gray pitched a complete game and allowed no earned runs as Berry College won at Mississippi College, 2-1, on Friday.

The Vikings improved to 2-1 for the season.

Gray (1-0) worked all nine innings, allowed four hits, struck out four and walked two. The home club scored an unearned run in the fourth frame to take a 1-0 lead.

Berry rallied with two runs in the fifth. Doug Heath was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Alex McGill (2-4, one run) then singled. Grant Perkins later singled home Heath. McGill scored on base hit by TC Boyd.

The Vikings collected eight hits in the game. Choctaw starter Mack Murray (0-2) took the defeat. He pitched six innings and gave up both BC runs.

The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. EST.

BERRY SOFTBALL

Berry lost both ends of Friday’s doubleheader against Piedmont at Ford Field in the season opener for both teams. Piedmont took the opener, 3-2, in spite of Lacey Herring’s 3-for-3 performance for Berry, and used a late rally to claim the second game, 6-4.

In the fourth inning of the opener, Herring ripped a two-out double off the base of the fence in left-center, and Shelby Smith drove her in with an infield single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Herring lined a RBI single to right, bringing Jessie Washington home and Berry within a run of Piedmont.

In the nightcap, Berry held a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh behind the pitching of Allison Coronado (0-1). Needing three outs to secure the win, Coronado retired Hamby to open the frame before Piedmont rallied.

Berry will return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader against Maryville College.
