A Rome man remained in jail without bail on Sunday night after he allegedly harmed a juvenile and then escaped police custody, resulting in a chase, according to a Floyd County Jail report.

According to the report:

Samuel David Bryan, 25, of 125 E. 14th St., struck the young victim with a metal broom handle late Saturday night, leaving visible marks on the back of the child’s legs and causing “excessive mental and physical pain.”

After Bryan was arrested, he was able to slip his hands out of the handcuffs. He climbed out of the patrol car and ran from the officer until he was caught.

Bryan was charged with a felony count of cruelty to children in the second degree as well as misdemeanor counts of escape and obstruction or hindering a law enforcement officer.
