For students that find themselves missing assignments or struggling academically, Saturday school is an option for students enrolled in Floyd County Schools.

Model High School will have the weekend session this Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. Transportation and meals are not provided.

Students are referred for Saturday school if they have been missing assignments. Teachers contact parents the week beforehand if their child should report on Saturday.

Glenn White, principal of Model High School, said Saturday school has been going on for about a year. Usually, White said, the weekend sessions are conducted once a month in order for kids to make up assignments and bring up their grades. The remaining dates for Saturday school for Model High are Oct. 20, Nov. 17, Dec. 8, Feb. 2, March 23, April 20 and May 11.

“It’s been very successful as far as students bringing their grades up and it’s also been very successful as far as students actually attending,” White said.

Saturday school is conducted, White said, in the best interest of the students. Kristi Park, a math teacher at Model, will preside over Saturday school this weekend, he said.

Model Assistant Principal Sarah Young said Saturday school serves as a monthly deadline for students to complete missing assignments and retake failed tests. Any grades that are a “0” that aren’t completed by Saturday school will remain a “0” for that month.

White said Saturday school is mainly a way to help students achieve academic success. “All public educators, we want every child to graduate from high school on time and get a job or go to college or into the military,” White said. “Whatever avenue they choose, our goal is to help them achieve that success.”

@CtownDog - (Assuming by your name you are from Cedartown)

Your comment is fitting coming from someone living in a school district that has the lowest graduation rate in all of Northwest Georgia(60.47%). That is from the district averages. As for individual school graduation rates, out of 27 schools Cedartown is next to last at 57.79%.

And you say "....but some people earn failure. Let them." I say help them. Some people need a little extra nudge here and there and should have it available.

If students get behind, sometimes it is tough to recover and a little boost with a dedicated Saturday may be the difference between graduation and dropping out. The students still have to pass the same test to graduate, so that hardly makes it watered down.

This is not news. It's just a scam to water down education and graduate more students. I know Model isn't the only school that does it, and I understand why with all the pressure to increase graduation rates, but some people earn failure. Let them.
