Ever wonder how much freight moves through Floyd County? The Georgia Center of Innovation for Logistics on Thursday published a new website detailing, on a county-by-county basis, how much truck and rail freight comes in and out of every county in Georgia annually.

Logistics — the movement of goods and services — is considered to be a strategic industry employing more than one million Georgians statewide.

Information available on the new website indicates, for example, that 998,887 tons of truck freight worth $3.4 billion had a Floyd County destination in 2011.

Floyd County took in more than 1.9 million tons of rail freight last year, worth $231.2 million.

Conversely, 1.2 million tons of truck freight originated from and left Floyd County for a destination outside the state of Georgia. The value of those shipments was put at $2.7 billion. More than 337,000 tons of rail freight originated in Floyd County, valued at more than $150.4 million.

The website also provides detailed information about the highway and rail infrastructure serving Rome and Floyd County.

“It will be of use to any potential companies thinking about coming here,” said Ken Wright, director of business and industry services at the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce. “It lets them know which rail lines come through and that we do receive ocean containers, air freight and things like that.”
