Sad and tragic news is on the front pages of every newspaper. What is wrong with some of the people who live in our wonderful world today? The Bible does not tell us to kill one another; it tells us to love one another and forgive our enemies. Any rational person would know that this is the road to peace, happiness and joy. It is the secret of a successful life. Getting even is not our goal.

Augustine said, “Thou hast made us for thyself, and the heart of man is restless until it finds rest in Thee.” It has always been true that “naught but God can satisfy the soul.”

I never forget that preachers are people, too. We are dealing with current events, death, grief, temptations and the grace of God. Our message is the greatest news in the world.

Dorothy Sayers once challenged the clergy by reminding us that “we have the best and greatest good news on earth, and some treat it as if it is good for nothing and cast it aside. Let us never forget that God moves in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform.” No matter what we think and believe, God will prevail and the victory will be ours if we are faithful to him.

Micah tells us, “He hath showed thee, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requires of thee, but to do justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.” (Micah 6:8) Let that be our guide. Though most of the news is bad, let us never forget that “with God all things are possible.”

The Connecticut school shooting tragedy, that took away innocent children, will be remembered for years to come.

Twelve beautiful girls and eight promising boys were killed, and were taken from the arms of those who loved them. Twenty children died.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of God.” Let us take comfort in the fact that they are in the presence of God. We cannot bring them back, but we can go to see them when our life is over in this world of trials and tribulations.

Children running, children singing, children learning, children playing is normal, but children dying was never a plan of God. Take comfort in knowing that all their fears and tears will be taken from them, because they will be with God.

Marcus Cornelius wrote: “Not now, but in the coming years; it may be in the better land, we’ll read the meaning of our tears, and there, sometime, we’ll understand. Then trust in God thro’ all thy days, fear not, for He doth hold thy hand; though dark the way, still sing and praise, sometime, sometime, we’ll understand. Why what we long for most of all, eludes so oft our eager hand; why hopes are crushed and castles fall, up there, sometime, we’ll understand.”

Life on earth has been exciting and wonderful, but we know that the best is yet to be. I suspect all of us have questions we would like to ask God. When life on earth is over we will have eternity to ask questions. When we get there and see our Lord, all our crazy questions will melt away! When we see His face all our questions will be answered. God is love. There is nothing greater than love.

There were heroes who saved the lives of children by giving their own lives. I do not know their names, but God knows, and I thank God for them. The Bible tells us, “This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:12,13) We thank God for those who gave their lives to save the children. God knows who they were.

The Lord must have said to those brave women who gave their lives to save the children, “Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful ... I will make thee ruler over many things, enter into the joy of thy Lord.” (Matthew 25:21) Let us always do our best and we will enter into the joy of the Lord. These women are now in the presence of the King.
