The inaugural Powder Puff Tournament presented by Harbin Clinic Plastic Surgery on Oct. 13 at Grizzard Park in Rome saw more than 500 players, volunteers and spectators turn out for some gridiron action with a feminine twist. The event in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month raised $6,742.
“Being so involved with breast cancer patients first hand, we get to see how valuable the Cancer Navigators are. This was a fun way to get people involved in giving back to such a great organization,” said event organizer Nancy Ely, who works at Harbin. “We are amazed at the support and participation for the Powder Puff Football Tournament, and we are absolutely looking forward to doing this again next year.”
It was Harbin’s Nip-Tuck Bombshells from Plastic Surgery that won the championship sequined football with the Powder Tuff squad from Floyd’s rehabilitation department as runners-up. Harbin General Surgery’s Slice and Dice Divas -- with their neon green shirts, tiaras and hot pink boas -- took home the Best Dressed award for their uniforms. Kathleen Wolfe’s Kath’s Kuties were the Top Fundraising Team with more than $700.
Other teams included the Redmond Rhinos, the Harbin Cancer Center Warren’s Warriors, Harbin Rehabilitation’s Bone Crushing Babes and Harbin Gastroenterology’s GI Janes. Two other teams, Harbin Spine and Pain and Maximum Body Training, contributed but were unable to participate on game day.
Referees from the Etowah Valley Football Association volunteered their time to officiate the games.
“This event was so much fun for spectators and participants alike,” said Charlotte Atkins, executive director of Cancer Navigators. “We are so grateful to Nancy Ely and Harbin Clinic for organizing the event, to the referees who donated their time and to the players and coaches who practiced and played so hard out there to help provide front-line services for local cancer patients.”
Later that same day, Gerber Collision and Glass played host to a car and motorcycle show at its Redmond Circle location. Car enthusiasts turned out to enjoy two- and four-wheel classics as well as live music, door prizes and refreshments. That event raised $1,015 for Cancer Navigators.
"With Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we wanted to do something in October that helps people in Rome," said Bryan Dahlin, general manager of Gerber Collision and Glass. "We know that Cancer Navigators helps people battling cancer and that the money will stay right here in our community to help those folks."
