Eddie Evans, who coaches the RFPRA’s 9-10-year-old Bulldogs, is recovering from surgery after suffering a heart attack following his team’s game Monday night in the Heritage Bowl playoffs.

A family member said on Tuesday that Evans was “alert and feeling better” after undergoing the procedure to have a stent put in Tuesday night.

Evans suffered the heart attack while standing in the parking lot of the Boys and Girls Club just moments after his team’s game in the finals. He was initially taken to Floyd Medical Center, then moved to Redmond.

Evans, who also serves as a community coach for Darlington’s varsity football team, had a continuous stream of visitors during his recovery period Tuesday, the family member said.

The Darlington coach staff were among the visitors, along with a host of friends from the RFPRA.

Evans has been involved with youth-league football for years, and is also known for his broadcast work, covering Darlington games. He served as the color commentator — beside play-by-play announcer Bryan Evans, his nephew — for several seasons.
