The Rome-Floyd County Recycling Center celebrated its makeover unveiling Saturday while carloads of electronics were unloaded and a few changes in city recycling pickup were announced.
First, the recycling center is changing its drop-off service hours. Residents will be able to drop off recyclables 24 hours a day, seven days a week but the center will only have assistants to unload items on Monday and Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m.
Effective Monday, the city is switching to commingled recycling pickup, which means that glass will no longer be able to be put in the green recycling bins for curbside pickup.
The curbside trailers that used to pick up recycling are being reused as
satellite locations around the city and county for recycling.
There, Rome and Floyd County residents can take glass, Numbers 1 and 2 plastics, steel and aluminum cans and mixed paper, including cardboard.
Those locations will be the West Rome IGA on Shorter Avenue, the Piggly Wiggly in Lindle and a site to be determined in East Rome.
The recycling center on Watters Street now features a purple exterior to match the purple recycling trucks which beginning Monday will be picking up commingled recycling for curbside service.
Recycling center manager Mark Scaggs said that the center will also no longer be participating in any buy-back of materials at the center.
The changes are expected to save the city $150,000.
“Through cooperation, we took a business approach and found a balance between operations and environmental concerns,” said County Commissioner Chad Whitefield, who serves on the Rome-Floyd Solid Waste Commission.
