Rome Remembers: World War II - Signing Up
Signing Up
Bill Fricks (Navy Corpsman, Marine Bomber Squadron 612): "I know we all had some fear as we approached it, and, as the time went by, we were always able to talk to each other and help each other and make a few jokes to help relieve the pressure."

When the United States declared war on both Japan and Germany, hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country began to enlist in the armed services. Romans were no exception.

Some locals, who were too young to enlist on their own, had to take their parents with them to allow them to sign up.

These are the memories of a few of those young men — most of them teenagers — as they signed up and prepared for the battles to come.

All remember a gambit of emotions from the outrage over attacks against Americans, excitement, uncertainty and, for some, even fear of the events to come.
