According to Capt. Billy Wilson with the Rome-Floyd Fire Department:
A utility crew hit a 1½-inch gas line while drilling near the northbound lanes of Shorter Avenue in front of MidTown Crossing shopping center at approximately 3:45 p.m.
Rome police officers were requested to divert traffic on Shorter through the parking lot of the shopping center for safety reasons and to ensure that Atlanta Gas Light crews would be able to get to the leak.
The leak was contained and traffic reopened at approximately 5:30 p.m., with Atlanta Gas Light crews remaining on the scene to finish repairing the damaged line.
There were no reports of any evacuations and local businesses were not affected by the leak at the time of the incident.
